On Saturday, April 23rd, Soh Daiko woke up extra early to perform for the Japanese American Association of New York’s annual cherry blossom festival in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, Queens.
The day was not as pretty as our spirits, and the rain poured down on us as we tried to set up. But even as one tent decided to fill up with rain and almost collapse, opposed to repelling the water away from our dear drums (and heads), the festival still persevered!
The audience, in the Matsuri spirit, dutifully enjoyed the performances in the tents and from the buses. We really enjoyed the great energy and support from all the people who came from far and wide, who were reminded as they stood in the storm of the hardships that face the people of Tohoku, Japan and the beauty and happiness that can come out of these hurdles like getting together and appreciating Japanese music!
