Soh Daiko performs in Tri-Temple performance “IN GRATITUDE” – celebrating 20 years of Nen Daiko

Soh Daiko was honored to perform as a special guest artist for Nen Daiko’s 20th Anniversary Concert on Saturday, August 30th, 2014.

The performance, which took place in the Synetic Theater in Crystal City, Virginia, was a celebration of the 20 years of friendship and collaboration between Nen Daiko of Ekoji Buddhist Temple and its two sister groups: Soh Daiko of New York Buddhist Church and Hoh Daiko of Seabrook Buddhist Temple.

The day started out with load in of the equipment, including a homemade riser brought by Nen Daiko which was assembled in record time. Each group set up their merchandise in the lobby area, and a meticulous spiking effort ensued. In the afternoon, together with the Synthetic Theater staff, we rehearsed and collaborated the final lighting touches to each set. Soh and Hoh Daiko were excited to play with Nen Daiko in two collaborative pieces as well, Man in Onrei and Omiyage, the grand finale!

Finally the time came to get dressed and get the performance going. Backstage, all three groups paid tribute to Beth Fujishige (founder of Nen Daiko) and Alan Okada (founding member of Soh Daiko) for their indispensable and generous contributions to taiko on the East Coast and taiko in North America. They honored the concert by acting as MCs. Many high fives and hugs were exchanged and we all went out on stage for a performance to remember!
